10:10 Visionary leadership in education and industry - avoiding the crushing forces of destruction
Presenter: John Rainford
We all know that anxiety and emotional stress is a killer. It is the number one cause of disability worldwide. It particularly affects our young people. Anxiety, eating disorders, depression, addiction - the list goes on. The second biggest cause of death in 10 to 24 years olds is suicide - but why? What's going on?
Are we meant to be so unhappy? From a purely economic point of view, it doesn't make any sense to have a nation of disaffected people who use all manner of means to address these issues, from prescribing heavy medication, to all types of remedial therapy. From a compassionate point of view - it is criminal that wem as a society, put our children through this.
Mixing experience with theory, John will offer a better approach than to allow the Forces of Destruction to proliferate.
There will be a short coffee break during the morning.
13:30 Afternoon session: A fresh approach to change in a VUCA* world: co-creating, healthy, resilient organisations
* VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity
Presenters: Ben Simpson and Denis Bourne
Deming said “people are entitled to joy in work”, and yet workplace stress seems to have become an accepted occupational hazard in many organisations. Meantime UK productivity has flat lined well behind comparable economies. So all the stress is doing nothing for the people involved and not much for the business either.
Perhaps even more worrying is the all too frequent response from management, which seems to be focused on symptoms and not causes. Well-being programmes, corporate gym memberships, having a crèche in the workplace, staff outings and social events etc are all very fine and may help, but they do not address the key questions, which are all about what is causing high levels of stress in the first place. We liken this to continuing to prescribe painkillers for someone suffering with a severe toothache. As most toothache sufferers know only too well, failure to deal with the causes of the toothache only results in even more severe difficulties later.
In this interactive and data-informed session Denis Bourne and Ben Simpson of Magus Bespoke Solutions will use their Indexer-lite diagnostic to help you identify the drivers of your organisation’s behaviour and the changes you can make to address their causes. Indexer-lite uses a model of systems behaviour in organisations that, when fully applied, means that high levels of employee engagement and performance are a given, achieved through a process of continual improvement in which every employee is a player.
To participate will require you to complete a very quick 14 question survey which will be sent to you towards the end of May. We will return the output to you directly within 2 days. We will ask you to bring these outputs with you on the day. There will be no public discussion of individuals' results unless the ‘owner of the data’ wishes to do so. Private, individual feedback will be available on request. The data can relate to any organisation that you know or knew well ‘from the inside’. We encourage all our members to use this opportunity to engage with ‘real, live working managers and leaders’ that are known to them socially or professionally and bring them along, as it will be a great introduction to the ever-better management practices that Deming taught.
There will be a short refreshment break during the afternoon.
15:30 Review of the day; Future meetings; Any other business
16:00 End of meeting. Time for networking.
